The Information Studies Program at Orchard Park
The Library Information Studies Program focuses on resource-based learning and information literacy skills. In order to implement the Information Studies Program, Mr. Lachapelle, in partnership with Orchard Park’s classroom teachers, selects a wide-range of appropriate print and non-print resources to support course curricula, organizes efficient information retrieval systems and instructs and assesses the use of resources and information technology. Thus, students learn and demonstrate their ability to use the latest technological tools ranging from a fully automated access systems to the many on-line services offered via the Internet.
“Students must be taught the skill of evaluating sources…Books have editors and publishers who select authors by their credibility and authenticity. Facts are meticulously checked before publication. However, on the Internet you are not always sure who the author is, and you rarely know their credentials.” Sandra Doggett, Beyond the Book: Technology Integration into the Secondary School.
Library Cards & Loans
Student/Library cards are issued to all students who make themselves available for school pictures. Cards must be presented each time material is borrowed. In the event of a loss, a non-picture replacement card is available for a cost of $2.00. The loan period for most material is two weeks. Students are charged $0.10 each day an item is overdue and all fines must be cleared before other items are borrowed. In the event of a loss of an item, students are charged the replacement cost of the item and they are unable to borrow other items until charges are cleared. Therefore, it is highly recommended that students not borrow items for other, since it makes the cardholder financially responsible for materials borrowed under their name.
