The Orchard Park Patriots went out in style.
Orchard Park capped an undefeated season (9-0) with a 29-10 win over the Westmount Wildcats yesterday at Ivor Wynne Stadium in the Hamilton Wentworth Interscholastic Athletic Conference Division II football Championship.
It was their second straight Division II title and could potentially be their last. Head coach Ang Morreale said the school will probably apply to move up to Division I next year.
"We need to move on and test ourselves," said Morreale. "Maybe this was the year that we could have moved up but we didn't know we were going to be this strong."
The Wildcats didn't make it easy for the Patriots to repeat despite the final score. Westmount held 3-0 and 10-7 leads early and Orchard Park didn't really break it open until the fourth quarter.
"They're a great football team. They're big and they're physical," Patriots quarterback Ryan Behie said of the Wildcats.
Behie engineered a couple of big drives for Orchard Park including going 62 yards in just three plays with just over four minutes left in the game to stretch their lead to 22-10 and end any hopes the Wildcats had of a comeback.
The big play was a 52-yard pass to Jacob Kit which appeared to catch Westmount napping. On the next play Mat Kit took it the final 11 yards to score.
"The offensive line gave me a lot of time and the post was wide open," said Behie.
Mat Kit was the scoring star of the game for Orchard Park. He also scored runs of 52 and 10 yards.
Mike Lill converted all the majors and added a single on a 30-yard field goal attempt that went wide.
Jordan Kinnaird had the Westmount touchdown on a 68-yard pass and run play from quarterback James Murphy.
Tyler Anderson converted and also added a 24-yard field goal.
Notes: It was an interesting week for Morreale who had an emergency appendectomy last Saturday.
"There was no way I was going to miss the game," he said. "I'm tired but I'll sleep well tonight."
